On, Thursday, January 7, 2021, John Sardoni Whitman, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully at home, ending his battle with cancer and heart disease, John was 76. 

John was born July 28, 1944 in Fountain Green, Utah to Lawrence Whitman Sardoni and Lavorda (Ilene) Oldroyd.  John served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints going out as Elder Sardoni and coming back as Elder Whitman, which was the desire of his father to get the “Whitman” name back in line with the history of the family.  John served in the Army Reserves for 8 years.  After his mission he returned home to Utah and married Elaine Dennett, together they raised three daughters, Stephanie, Heidi, Janna and four sons, Charles (Chuck), Richard, Marc and Robert. John lived in Magna, and worked for First Security Bank as an auditor and loan officer.  After retiring from banking John worked at Split Mountain Youth Center as the Graveyard Tech that kept everything and everyone in line.

John was very active in the church with many callings as well as serving as the Bishop to the Lakeridge First Ward in, Magna Utah. John moved to Roosevelt Utah and remarried, Lynn Stehle Whitman on June 12, 1999, in the Vernal Temple.  Adding to the family two more daughters, Christina and Anna and another son, Clifford.  John and Lynn enjoyed serving in the Vernal Temple on Friday evenings for several years before health issues arose. 

 John was a cowboy that lived the cowboy way.  His participation in Cowboy Action Shooting where he was known as Dutch John with his Colorado Honey by his side. The friendships there will always be cherished. He loved animals of all kinds, riding horses, raising chickens, ducks and geese.  The memories of camping either for the Whitman Round up, Vernal 8th Ward Girls Camp and Glines Stake Trek will not soon before gotten of his quiet support and loving example he gave.  He enjoyed watching grandkids play football, wrestle, gymnastics, dance and being talented with photography.

John was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and daughter.  He is survived by his wife, 9 children, 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral Services will be on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vernal 8th Ward Chapel, (1499 West Highway 40); A viewing will be held from 9:00-10:45 prior to the services. Interment at Maeser Fairview Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the America Legion,  the Vernal 8th ward will provide a luncheon afterwards.
