Thomas Larry Montgomery, age 80, passed away surrounded by his family on August 6, 2017 in Vernal, Utah, due to complications of pneumonia. Tom was born on October 12, 1936, in Vernal, the fifth of nine children, to John Russell and Edith Laverne Anderson Montgomery. Tom grew up in Vernal. He graduated from Uintah High School. In 1956 he married the love of his life, Betty Jean Massey. On June 7, 1962, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with three children, Jolene, Brad, and Wade. Tom was in the army for two years. When he returned, he worked for his father at Vernal Hide and Fur. Tom and his brother, Terry, formed Montgomery Bros. Inc. and ran the business successfully for many years. Later Tom started Montgomery Recycling Inc., which is still a family operated business. Tom loved all aspects of horses. He spent many years team roping, mostly as a heeler. The Book Cliffs held a special place in his heart. Tom was a dedicated family man. He loved spending time with his immediate and extended family. Tom and his wife were active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and enjoyed serving as ordinance workers in the Vernal Utah Temple. Tom is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Betty Jean, his parents, two sisters, Marilyn Childs and Janice Weeks, and a grandson, Morgan Baker. Tom is survived by his children, Jolene (Dean) Baker, Brad (Michele) Montgomery, and Wade (Leslie) Montgomery as well as twelve grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Tom is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Jack Montgomery, Jim Montgomery, Marjorie (John) Shea, Terry (Jodie) Montgomery, Judy Kraft, and Dennis (Loreen) Montgomery. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11 am at the Naples First Ward Chapel (2313 South 1500 East). A viewing will be held at the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary, Friday evening, August 11, 2017, from 6 until 8 pm and one hour prior to services on Saturday. Interment will be in the Vernal Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by American Legion. Services are under the direction of the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
