Monta Rae Showalter

1936-2025

Vernal

Our beloved Monta Rae returned to her Father in Heaven on May 10, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones. She was born July 14, 1936, the fifth child of Lamond and Viola Caldwell in Vernal, UT. She lived in Maeser all of her life. She graduated from Uintah High School with the class of 1954 where she was crowned the Queen of the Sweetheart Ball. Monta Rae married Gary Richardson in 1955 and they had three children Shanna Campbell, Daryl Richardson, and Brent Richardson. They later divorced.

Monta Rae then married Robert (Bud) Showalter in June of 1974 and gained three more children Wendy, Cathy, and Michael. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo Temple in 1992. Monta Rae and Bud enjoyed their time together traveling to the Ranch in Slater Creek and later to their winter home in Mesa, AZ.

She worked for Mountain Bell Telephone, Basin State Bank, and did bookkeeping for the family business B&B Well Service. She was a faithful member of the LDS church and had many callings. Monta Rae was an excellent homemaker and enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, baking, and having root beer floats on the patio. She loved her yard work and flowers; Grandma always had the best looking yard. Her greatest joy was spending time and making memories with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grandma Rae will be missed.

Monta Rae was a very kind and caring person who was always taking care of everyone, showed unconditional love, and welcomed anyone to her home.

She was one of the prettiest girls in high school. One of her classmates agreed that she was the prettiest, but also the meanest. Monta Rae said that was because she always had to deal with her older brothers tormenting her.

She is survived by her children: Shanna, Daryl, and Brent, 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Her brother Arlo Caldwell and her sister Christine Smallwood, many nieces and nephews especially Emily Christiansen and Ellen Kiever (Terry).

Monta Rae is preceded in death by: her husband Robert, her parents Lamond and Viola Caldwell, brothers Markel, Raymond, and Donald Caldwell, sister Elva Searle, and favorite grandson Brandon Richardson.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at 11 am at the Maeser Fairview Cemetery.
