Matthew was born in Shiner, Texas but was raised and lived in Fredericksburg, Texas where he spent most of his life. He came to vernal to live with his sister and brother -in-law a decade ago. He immediately fell in love with the mountains and remained a resident in Vernal. Matthew was a wonderful, unique chef in a lot of fine restaurants. He loved cooking and was always trying something new. He also loves being outdoors which is where he was when he was not working. He always kept the yard looking nice, He enjoyed BBQ and did very well at it.
Matthew was a very sweet and kind person, He made friends wherever he went. He always accepted people for what and who they were. He was the type of person who’d give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Matthew took life on life’s terms and lived one day at a time. Although he was always in a lot of pain. Matthew was loved by many people. He was funny and very silly at times. He brought a lot of smiles to a lot of people. Matthew was a #1 Dallas Cowboy fan. He loved to watch the games and would usually wear one of his Cowboys Jersey’s or t shirts.
He will always be loved and missed by his family and friends.
He is proceeded in death by his father Curtis W Merz, his grandparents, and multiple friends.
He is survived by his mother Rose Haun of Fredericksburg, Tx, his sister and brother-in-law, Shirley Ann Kalka and Dennis Gardiner, of Vernal, a brother Bryan A. Kalka of Houston, Tx, and sister Cindi Moellering, and a brother Randy Kalka, both of Fredericksburg, Tx. He is also survived by 4 children Christian, Thomas Merz, of Kerrville, Tx. Alicia and Julia Ann of Brownwood, Tx.
Matthew 11: 28-29
28. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
