Mary Joy Smuin

It is with great sadness we announce the death of our mother Mary Joy Vincent Smuin. She passed away October 21, 2016 of natural causes at age 90. Born January 18, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah to William and Mary Vincent who were descendants of Irish Immigrants. She is the last survivor of her immediate family of nine siblings. Married Doyle K. Smuin on July 24, 1943, just prior to him leaving for WWII. Mary graduated from West High School one year early and worked in a factory during the war. They then started a family and lived in Sandy, Utah. In 1959 they moved to Vernal where they opened Quality Heating and Air Conditioning with her as the accountant. She later worked at the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service and United States Geological Survey. She was very involved in her childrens' lives and supported their sports, plays, recitals and scouts. She was a member of Kingsbury Community Church Ladies Aid, kept score for baseball and bowled for many years. Her hobbies were camping, canning, sewing, flower gardening, and journaling. She loved holidays, especially Christmas and enjoyed her outdoor lights all year long but the highlight of the year was deer hunting and gathering firewood for the winter. Her survivors include: Janeall (Jerry) Kirkland of Hurricane, Utah, Jackie (Gale) Robbins, DeVon Smuin, Levi (Mary) Smuin and Dan (Gayle) Smuin of Vernal and Bonnie (Tom) Lawson of Salt Lake City. 27 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. She was known as "Grandma Grapes" to all of her great grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her husband Doyle, grandsons Kelly Jake Winn, Blake Lee Smuin, Donny T. Sawyer and daughter-in-law Susan Smuin. There will be a funeral at the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary on Tuesday October 25th, 2016 (our dads birthday) at 1:00 PM with a visitation starting at 12:00 noon. We would like to thank the Uintah Care Center for the loving and tender care they gave our mother for the last 9 months.
