Jean Gardiner Smith

Martha Jean Gardiner Smith returned home to heaven on November 19, 2023 surrounded by family.  She was born June 14, 1929 to Obed Crosby Haycock and Martha Mary Harding.  She was the oldest of five children.

She married her sweetheart, Garl Duaine Gardiner on August 26, 1946.  It was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.  They were blessed with five children, Patricia (William) Adams, Connie (john) Shumway, Michael Duaine (RaNae), David Jay (Lydia), Bette (Gary) Laracco and 16 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren.  Her greatest joy was her family and she cherished each new little one.  She was a loving mother and grandmother and was constantly sacrificing for her family.

Garl died in 1973 and she later married Donald H. Smith.

Jean delivered mail for the US Post Office for more than 30 years, and even after retirement she worked part time at the Western Park and Uintah County Jail into her 80's.  She was active in the community and a pink lady for many years.  She was always there to gladly help someone in need and made many trips to Salt Lake City to give a ride to someone needing transportation there.

She loved her many animals over the years and her greatest worry when she passed was what would happen to her dogs, Odie and Josie and the black stray cat she took in.

She is survived by all five children, her grandchildren and her sister Lois (Roland) Porter. She is preceded in death by both husbands, two grandsons, Robert John and Jason Duaine Shumway, her brothers Don, Ralph, and Richard Haycock and her parents.

Graveside services will be held Saturday November 25, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vernal Memorial Park.
